Week 8: Role of Institutions
One part that stood out to me was how institutions help reduce uncertainty. I hadn’t considered how much we rely on them to maintain order. For example, the idea that institutions set “rules of the game” made a lot of sense, especially when thinking about how markets, governments, or even families function. I also found the discussion on path dependency interesting, how past decisions and systems influence the way institutions develop and resist change. It reminded me of how some policies stay in place even when they don’t work well anymore.
What I found most eye-opening was the role of political institutions. The way they define power and authority, and how they are crucial for democratic governance, made me think more critically about the system we live in. I now understand that weak institutions can lead to corruption and instability, while strong institutions support justice, accountability, and progress.
Overall, this week taught me that institutions are not just background structures, they are active forces that shape society and individual behavior. It made me reflect on how much we depend on them and the importance of making sure they are fair and effective.
