Week 6: Roles of Universities in Sustainable Development
Salam all,
This week’s lecture helped me realize how important universities are in promoting sustainable development, not just through teaching and research, but also by shaping students into responsible and ethical individuals. One point that really stood out to me was the idea from Professor Syed Naquib al-Attas that education should go beyond just academics and include spiritual, moral, and intellectual development. It reminded me that as a student, I am not just here to chase good grades, but also to become a better human being who can contribute positively to society.
I was also struck by the idea that universities should not only generate knowledge but also share it with communities to solve real-world problems, especially for those in the “bottom billion.” I found this concept very meaningful because sometimes we forget that our studies should have a purpose that benefits others, not just ourselves. The slides mentioned that our research should be accessible, affordable, and relevant to the people who need it most. I think that’s a powerful way to view education as a form of service to humanity.
Another thing that caught my attention was the comparison between conventional learning and transformational learning. It made me reflect on how I’ve been learning so far and whether I am truly internalizing values like sustainability, empathy, and responsibility. I believe our universities can do more to create hands-on experiences and community engagement opportunities that allow students to practice what they learn in real-life situations.
In conclusion, this week reminded me that being a university student comes with a duty. We are the future leaders, researchers, and changemakers, and it’s our responsibility to use our knowledge and values to create a sustainable and just world.
